This part of the website is where we like to feature fun adventures around the area, as we do like to paint ourselves as a comfortable and warm landing pad for the badass visitors we have! This month, we’d like to feature rest.

This time of year begs the question, what if we travel to a peaceful spot and just…don’t do much? Walks to the coffee shop, strolls by the river under yellow leaves, stretching with views? Sounds pretty amazing to us, and something that our culture doesn't allllllways celebrate.

The modern Viking culture has this down a little better than us. Our hustle culture, whether it be work, adventure, or counting macros before fitting in a yoga class at a lunch hour can leave us a bit depleted. Nordic rest is a cultural enigma that treats stillness and recovery as a necessary part of your day - not a reward for finishing everything on your to do list!

It’s not the pressure of meditation from your phone app right when you wake up, it’s not booking 3 yoga classes while you’re here, and it’s not trying to bag 2 peaks instead of one - it’s the belief that you get to simply be, without the optimization of time that we are so often pressured into fitting into our days and nights.

There are Scandinavian concepts we’d like to chew on for this month’s field guide! “

RO is a Norwegian/ Danish concept that defines a state of quietude, calm, and mental stillness.

FRILUFTSLIV is the idea of celebrating the “open air life”. Simply spending time in nature not for exercise but for another level of restoration.

LAGOM is the concept of “just the right amount”. Fitting in “just the right amount” of rest every day is something that takes a lot of practice in our hustle culture!

HYGGE is our favorite, and the inspiration behind our restaurant and our lodge - the coziness and warmth and the little things that provide an emotional safety from the craziness of the world. I promise, we are not abandoning adventure and play in our mountains!

We’re inviting you to just come to Buena Vista and be, and maybe focus on Ro, Friluftsliv, plan some Lagom, and cozy up in our Hygge-centered suites, and let’s see what happens to that nervous system!

You deserve it.
